What makes granite good for kitchen worktops
Granite is a natural stone and very hard wearing, coming from the minerals in the granite that interlock giving the material great strength and durability. The colours are determined by the mixtures of minerals and quartz that are in the granite, with particular colours coming from different countries, with the most common countries exporting granite being Africa, Spain, Italy, India and now China.
Granite's hardness is second only to diamond, therefore making it a great material for the construction of worktops as it is resistant to scratches, heat and because it is so hard a diamond saw is required to cut the slabs into worktops.
There is a whole rainbow of colours available meaning that there is a granite to suit any type of kitchen from very modern to traditional farmhouse styles both benefiting from granite worktops to finish the décor as well as being practical.
One important thing to bear in mind when choosing the colour of your granite worktops is uniformity of colour and the number of joins you are going to have to have. The darker, black granites are more uniform and solid in colour so joins are less visible, however the lighter colours will show up more variation and can make the joins very noticeable.
So in general terms granite is a great material for kitchen, or even bathroom, worktops as they are not porous making it perfect for under-mounted sinks, they are very hardwearing, virtually scratch-proof, highly heat resistant and they will not stain easily.
Granite is more expensive than its laminate counterparts, but because of its natural stone properties it will outlast even the best laminate and you are able to be much more inventive with your kitchen planning/designs with things such as radiused ends, rounded corners, sinks mounted underneath the worktop, drainer grooves carved into the granite and you could even have matching window sills made to complete the sleek look.
