Mark Kumar - JPEG VS RAW - Which Is Better?
A very close friend of mine and great photographer, we always have a different opinion on which is better - JPEG or RAW. So, this is dedicated to you buddy. I hope after reading this you might consider shooting JPEG. Here are my thoughts on JPEG VS RAW.
Why some photographers like to shoot in RAW?
Most photographers like to shoot in raw because it has all the information which they can later edit in the post production. They will be able adjust things like – under or over exposure, color saturation and etc.
But here is the kicker; all these adjustments will cost them to spend a lot of time in front of the computer. For example, let's say you photograph a wedding and shoot in RAW and you took 1200 photographs. Now you have to spend at least 2 to 5 minutes adjusting a photo in camera raw before bringing it into photoshop. In photoshop, you will spend another 5 to 10 minutes fine tuning the photograph. So, roughly you spent any where from 10 to 12 minutes working on a photograph. You will have to spend around 200 to 400 hours in front of the computer editing all those 1200 photographs.
Here is my question to you, as a photographer when are you having fun – editing photographs or taking them? I strongly believe taking photographs is more fun. Now, don't getting me wrong. I love editing photographs especially the part where I can put my own creative editing spin on them. However, I don't want to spend so much time that I feel like I am becoming a slave to my computer.
Shoot JPEG
All the photographs that you see on http://www.kumarphotography.com or http://www.markkumar.com/ were shot in JPEG. I get my exposure, color saturation and etc right in the camera. That way my post production time is cut down to next to nothing. So, while the raw shooters are editing their first wedding. I am ready to shoot my third wedding and I still have time to go to the movies.
So, if you want to become a slave to your computer, shoot RAW!!!!!
P.S. Maybe that's why some clients have to wait for months and months to see their awesome wedding photographs because their photographer is a RAW shooter. Maybe???
