Why Are Diamonds So Precious?
Diamonds are forever, these precious stones are the cause of great happiness and indeed great unhappiness but why do they hold such a fascination over us? Well for starters, diamonds are the only gem besides graphite that are made from a single element. A diamond is completely made of carbon atoms crystallised in a cubic arrangement. Secondly, they form at between 120-200 kilometres (75-120 miles) underneath the ground, unobtainable and out of reach. Thirdly, even the most recent diamond is a staggering 45 million years old. Fourthly, they are formed deep in the Earth's interior by colossal pressures of between 45 and 60 kilobars and scalding temperatures of 900-1300 degrees Celsius. Fifthly, they are fired to the earth's surface by the might of a volcanic eruption which flings a ball of magma at supersonic speed in the form of which is known as a kimberlitic pipe. About every pipe in a hundred contains diamonds, the right speed and cool down needs to occur to finally deliver this miracle which has just endured a journey from the centre of the Earth. So, no wonder they are so precious, but how precious? Diamonds are measured in carats with one carat being roughly equivalent to one-fifth of a gram and are evaluated on the four C's - Carat, Colour, Cut and Clarity. On 8 October 2007, Sotheby's auction in Hong Kong broke the record for the most expensive diamond ever sold when a 6.04 carat diamond of blue hue and quality cut was sold for 7.98 million US dollars thereby making 1.32 million US dollars per carat.
