5 - A Present Help
God is definitely a very present help in time of trouble. Psalm 46:1 of the Bible declares this. This chapter will outline briefly the way that God sustained me through a very trying time of my life.
During this time I did not have control over any of the circumstances, but God was giving me patience to carry me through this.
One interesting dream or vision I had in my ICU room was of some business man walking back and forth talking on his cell phone. He seemed like the president of some company in his hospital gown walking back and forth talking on his cell phone, conducting business. He seemed to be a bit frustrated that he was in the hospital when he had a business to run. At the time, this seemed very real.
This could not happen because a person in ICU was not allowed to meander about in the halls without a nurse.
For real?
I don't know if this was for real or just a vision, but I remember being in my bed around 2am surrounded by 3 men. The 3 men were 2 ambulance drivers and 1 security officer. I was complaining about not being allowed to get up from my bed. I said "I don't think it is right to let someone lie in this bed, and not let the person get up and walk around". The security guy was around 40 years of age, tall and slender (compared to the others), was wearing his uniform, had a very serious expression on his face, and was balding in the middle of his head. The 2 ambulance guys were both wearing dark blue, short sleeved uniforms.
The guy that seemed to do most of the talking had darker hair, in his early 30's, and a grin on his face while he was talking. I was very adamant in what I was saying, but nothing changed.
A thought that kept going through my mind was "I wish they would give me a bigger bed". I felt like Ned and his little bed (Doctor Seuss). My bed had a weight limit of 150 lbs. and I thought, "I weigh 170 lbs, this bed is too small". The hospital staff did not change my bed.
Visiting hours
Visiting hours in ICU ended at 9pm, and my wife had to leave. Since I was drugged up my account is only of what I did experience. Apparently the drugs were very strong, but I did not know when the drugs were administered, because they did not come in the room to tell me, "OK, time to take your pain medication", holding a big shot. The administration was through the IV.
Medication
The medication I was given in the hospital was Decadron ®, Protonix ®, and Keppra ®. The nurse brought these to me in a little paper cup. The type of cup was similar to the one a person receives with a food sample at a store. The medications I was given were to control some of the side effects of the surgery. I did not question the medications at the time; I just took what was given to me. Decadron ® is a corticosteroid medication also known as dexamethansone, and is prescribed to reduce the swelling and inflammation around the tumor area. Protonix ® was prescribed to reduce any acid that was produced inside my stomach as a result of the Decadron ®. This Protonix ® is also known as pantoprazole. Keppra ®, levetiracetam, is supposed to control or prevent seizures. This Keppra ® also was prescribed for me to take for around ten days after I was released from the hospital and went home.
Frustration
There were times in the hospital when my hands had to be restrained with Velcro straps which were around 2ft in length each. One end of the strap was placed around the bed and the other was placed around my wrist. I remember finding the straps in my bed when I woke up in the morning. This was placed on both of my arms, I guess to keep me from pulling out the tube in my head. At the time, I thought they just wanted to keep me in my bed. I also know that I could not put my hands together with those straps on. I liked to fold my hands, but I could not when my hands were held back. I remember praying, "Lord, help me through this".
He did give me the strength to endure. I was not allowed to leave the ICU area, my little room, until my temperature went down. My temperature stayed around 102 degrees for many days. Each time they took my temperature it was still high. I was extremely frustrated and thought to myself, "Some people's temperatures are just higher than others". There was a male nurse who took my temperature, and he kept saying, "It's still high".
